Come Join Us at Faith Watchers                 November 28, 2013

Dear friends,

I read the average American consumes 4,500 calories and 229 grams of fat on
Thanksgiving Day. You can't help it. Temptation is everywhere. For some of us
that temptation follows us home in the form of leftovers and rides with us right
through the rest of the holidays and into the new year.

I remember someone saying that January marks the highest enrollment period of
the year for local gyms and Weight Watchers meetings. That's because most of us
gain 7 - 10 pounds from Thanksgiving to New Years. It has become so bad that
many of us have stopped fighting it.

I was one of those who enjoyed the holidays and then went back to Weight
Watchers every January. That was until my friend Mark told me that people who
head to the gym and go back to Weight Watchers before Thanksgiving gain a lot
less weight than those who wait until January.

It made sense. When we are in community we have more tools and are better
equipped to face the daily temptations. It struck me that we could use this same
reasoning to suggest that people who are connected to a faith community will do
much better in confronting the challenges of daily life.

We were never meant to face life alone. God created us to be in community with
Him and with one another. The perfect expression of that is in the beloved
community. That's why I love the church.

The church is not perfect. It is made up of people like you and me. We all have
those issues we are struggling with. Yet together, studying God's Word, armed with
grace and hope, we can rise to overcome the temptations, struggles and challenges
that come our way.

So what are you waiting for? If you have drifted away from your church family, I
hope you will head back to church this holiday season. Come claim your Christmas
gift a little early.  Come and be blessed by the Lord.

God bless. See you in church.  Cal
