I've always had a fascination with the American Presidency. So when I got caught up in
it the other day, I got really excited. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Lights were
flashing. Cars were ushered off the main road. People were being asked to step back
a few feet.
I had just come from the White House Visitor's Center when I noticed a blur of activity
coming from the direction of the White House. It was as if the floodgates opened. A sea
of vehicles with flashing lights and blasting sirens came rolling down Pennsylvania Avenue.
It was surreal. It took me a minute to realize what I was seeing. Then, like something out
of a movie, three huge Presidential limousines went flying by me. I waved. A few minutes
later it was over and everything returned to normal. Yet, that moment was mine forever.
I had been within forty feet of the most powerful person on the planet. I stood there for a
few minutes thinking about what it meant. The truth is that he didn't even notice me. To
any President in a motorcade, people like you and me are just scenery along the road.
As I continued my walk, my mind drifted to another motorcade of sorts. I thought about
the crowds that lined the street to see Jesus enter the Holy City. Like this, it must have
been an awesome event. To catch a glimpse of his eye. To see him wave. To see him pass by.
I'll probably never get to meet the President but I have experienced the reality of being
with Jesus. That's enough for me. You see, Jesus doesn't just pass us by. He stops. He
steps into our world. He walks beside us. He takes our burdens and frees us to really live.
The best part of all is that when Jesus passes by, he doesn't disappear into the horizon.
He invites us to hop in and join him on the journey. We are no longer spectators. We
become part of his entourage. He blesses us so we can bless others.
So what are you waiting for? Jesus is coming your way. You've heard the Easter
message. He lives and he's looking for people like you and me to reach out and share
the message of love and hope. You can just stand and wave or you can step out and
join him. It's up to you.
God bless! See you in church.
