You Are A Promise
October 26, 2016
The first thing I did was look at the ingredient list. How bad can wheat thins be?
The wrapper touted them as being 100% whole grain wheat. The fact that it was
garden valley veggie flavor had to count for something. It sure sounded healthy.
The list started with cabbage and included red & green bell peppers, malt syrup,
leavening, calcium phosphate, baking soda, maltodextrin, salt, hydrolyzed corn,
yeast protein, garlic powder, onion powder, monosodium glutamate and more.
I did a double take. I didn't see any mention of grains or wheat. All I saw was a list
of dried vegetables and chemicals. I was outraged! (Well not really.) I was dumbfounded.
This was not truth in advertising. Where was the (beef) wheat?
Just as I was about to put them away I noticed there was a little flap covering the area
where the ingredients were listed. You had to look closely to see it. I lifted it up and
found that whole grain wheat flour was listed as a primary ingredient.
The packaging had obscured the reality of what was inside each cracker. I felt much
better eating the snack even if it did contain a few vegetables. That got me to thinking.
What if we were judged only by what people saw?
Sometimes we say and do things that obscure who we really are. We hold on to beliefs
that don't seem to be in sync with what we profess. We do things that leave others
scratching their heads.
Do you remember the Gaither song, "I am a Promise?" It goes like this: "I am a
promise. I am a possibility. I am a promise with a capital "P". I am a great big bundle
of potentiality. And I am learnin' to hear God's voice."
Thankfully God sees the flap that hides our hearts. He sees us as we were created to
be not as we appear to be at any given moment. So don't give up. Keep working to let
the real you, the child of God, become that promise that God sees in you.
God bless! See you in church!
