Who Do You Know?
August 30, 2017
"Brad Paisley? You mean The Brad Paisley?" I asked. It was as if someone
had set off a set of fireworks in my brain. I could hardly contain the
excitement. "You mean 'Waitin on a Woman' and 'Welcome to the Future'
Brad Paisley?" I asked. She smiled. "Yes. That's him."
I almost fell on the floor. It had begun as idle conversation. "My best friend
from college is in town and we're having lunch." she said. She went on, "Her
son is a singer and he has a concert in the area." Innocently I asked, "Is her
son somebody I would know?"
I love Brad Paisley. I'm not ashamed to admit it. He is my favorite country
artist. I have downloaded all his songs on my Ipod. So I have to confess that
the wheels started turning in my brain almost the minute I realized that Pat
was just two degrees of separation from him.
That made Pat a superstar in my book. I don't think I've ever known someone
who is best friends with the mother of one of my idols. Everyone has a mother,
right? They all have friends. I couldn't help but wonder if Pat could arrange an
introduction for me.
As I was daydreaming about meeting Brad, it suddenly dawned on me that
we all have a connection to an even bigger star. Do you remember those
stories about Jesus showing up and the crowds pressing in around him?
Everyone wanted to get a piece of him.
Jesus came teaching about love, grace and forgiveness. He offered his
hearers a chance to begin again. It didn't matter where they had been or
what they had done. Jesus invited everyone to come to God, to ask for
forgiveness and then start over doing things God's way.
The truth is that a lot of us have messed up. We have made mistakes. We
have regrets. The Good News is that Jesus is singing our song. He is ready
to welcome us to the future. He knows we have mud on our tires and need
to be checked for ticks. But he has promised to be there when we get where
we are going.
Here's the best part: We know him and we can introduce him to all our
friends. So don't hide the fact that you know him. Let everybody know.
Then invite them all to meet him.
God bless. See you in church.
