Where's the Beef?
June 20, 2018
An image of bees surrounding a hive came to mind as I was waiting
to pick up my order. People were coming in and out to order their
fresh meats for the Father's Day weekend activities.
They weren't just shopping for hamburgers. They were hauling away
porterhouse steaks, pork chops, prime rib, and almost every kind
of select cut you could ask for. Everything looked so good.
Tony Spino, the owner, was greeting people by name and working
the counter. He was taking orders and wrapping up the meat as he
bantered back and forth with the customers. It was nice to see.
I'm told that's how it used to be before the big supermarkets came
along. Butchers, bakers and grocers waited on you like you were
family. You were more than a number. You were a somebody.
I saw this first hand working at Ben & Leo's market in Colchester
as a teen-ager. The owner, Ben Cohen, preached customer
service. He taught us to treat everyone special.
The thing about people like Tony and Ben is that they actually
practice what they preach. They don't just tell you what to do.
They lead by example. They model what they hope you will do.
It is something to think about as Christians. Jesus taught us about
love, forgiveness, grace and compassion. He didn't do it with a
lecture. He did it in the way he engaged people like you and me.
So as you head to the market, the beach, the stores and restaurants
this summer, remember to live in such a way that when people see
you, they will see the face of God and be blessed!
May God's love, joy, peace, patience, kindness and goodness shine
through you this summer! If you ask me, that's where you'll find
God bless! See you in church.
