Where You Were Meant to Be?
July 6, 2016
I saw the ball coming. I watched as it made its slow arc to section 6 about
fifteen rows deep. I saw the man reach up and grab for it and pull it in.
As he turned and smiled at the crowd, my first thought was "That should
have been my ball!"
There is not a bad seat at Dodd Stadium. Whether you pay for the premium
seats up in the sky boxes or the cheap seats on the bleachers, you can see
the game well and enjoy the crowd, the peanuts, and the cracker jacks.
When I arrived at the ballpark I didn't give much thought to my choice
of seat. My daughter said she was on the first base side with her friends.
I just wanted to be in the general vicinity of where they were so I could
move to an empty seat near them.
Sure enough, there were several seats open so I went over to join them.
It wasn't until that foul ball came our way that I even thought about my
actual seat. I mentioned that the guy who caught the ball was sitting
where I was supposed to be. Then, without missing a beat I said, "But I
am sitting right here where I was meant to be."
Later that evening it struck me that there is a difference between where
we are supposed to be and where we are meant to be. When I was struggling
in college my pastor said to me, "You have a choice Cal. You can just go
with the flow and let life carry you along or you can choose to do something
meaningful with your life."
He was right. We all have choices. We can choose to let our background,
our culture, our social class, our negative choices determine where we
will end up. We can follow the choices to the place where we are supposed
to be but I think there is a better way.
God has a plan for our lives. He has called us to follow him. He has invited
us to do something meaningful with our time on earth. We may miss out
on some things (Who wants a FOUL ball anyway?) but when we are in the
place we are meant to be, we will be surrounded by those we love and the
One who loves us best.
God bless! See you in church.
