What is Your Ministry?
October 5, 2016
Last month I went back to my Alma Mater for an all class reunion. Memories came
flooding back as I walked around campus. Lori and I spent the first year of our married
life living in an apartment there. Those were good days.
I was at Andover Newton Theological School between 1982-1985 working on my
Master's of Divinity degree. I returned in 1990 and spent the next five years working
on my Doctorate. My call to ministry was shaped by the professors I studied with.
They helped me understand who I was and what gifts I was bringing to the pastorate.
My faith grew and through my experiences I came to embrace the awesome responsibilities
of ministry. By the time I graduated I was ready to serve the Lord.
I was struck by a man who shared his story with us at lunch. I never caught his name.
Everyone was asking questions about where we have been and what we had done
since graduation. He replied that he had been at the school since 1985.
He smiled and said, "I began as a candidate for the ministry. I had every intention
of becoming a pastor." Then he shrugged his shoulders and said, "One of my
Professors approached me in my third year and said something that changed my life."
"Have you ever thought that maybe God could use your gifts for a different type of
ministry?" The fellow went on to explain that he wasn't a people person. He knew that.
He just wanted to serve the Lord. His professor suggested another way.
Within a month this man had accepted a position in the technology department at
the school. He had an aptitude for computers and discovered that this was his true
calling. Today his tech department is equipping staff and students alike for ministry.
The truth is that we all have a ministry. We are sent out to use whatever gifts and
talents we have to serve the Lord. Whenever you share Christ's love, offer his grace
or bring a blessing to one in need, you are doing the work of ministry. So keep it up.
God bless! See you in church.
