We Are the Champions
                                                                           April 6, 2016
Dear Friends,

The crowd in Indianapolis was on their feet cheering when senior Briana Pulido sunk
the last basket of the game. It marked the closing seconds of an historic game for the
UCONN Husky women's basketball team.

The big three, Breanna Stewart, Morgan Tuck and Moriah Jefferson, did something
that no one else had ever done in the history of women's NCAA basketball. They led
the team to an unprecedented fourth consecutive national championship.

Of all the stories surrounding the team, my favorite concerns Briana Pulido and Tierney
Lawlor. My mother-in-law, a big UCONN fan, shared how Breanna Stewart sent out
a tweet announcing a try-out for walk-on candidates three years ago.

Lawlor and Pulido showed up.  When given the opportunity, both of them shined. Their
grit and determination was noticed by the coaches. They played their hearts out even
though they knew they had little chance of making the team.

They not only made the team but went to be part of two National Championship teams.
A lot of what they did was unseen by the fans. They only got a minute or two of game
time here and there.  Yet Stewart said that the whole team was better because they were
there to push them every practice.

That's why Coach Geno Auriemma awarded them scholarships last fall. He wanted to
reward them for two years of sticking with it, gutting it out, giving 100% and laying it all
out on the floor. "They deserved it," he said. "They are a part of this team."

So it is with you and me. We may not grab the headlines. We may not get star billing and
win many awards. Yet we are part of God's team and have a role to play. When we give it
our all, God gets the glory and success is sure to follow.

The key is to live faithfully and in tune with the Lord. Keep talking to him every day.
Read the Word. Let it flow through you. Practice what you preach. Encourage others
to do the same. For when you do, the victory is yours, and great things will follow.

God bless! See you in church.
