Too Good to Be True? Some Food for Thought
March 23, 2016
I saw the sign and thought I had read it wrong. It was simply too good to be true. My friends know how
thrifty (cheap) I am. So when the opportunity for a full breakfast for under two dollars pops up, I am on it
like a dog after a car.
The truth is that I drove by it about a dozen times before I finally stopped to check it out. I figured there
had to be a catch. Before I entered the shop I read the sign carefully. It read, "Early Bird Special -
2 eggs, home fries, toast and coffee for $1.99."
I sat down and ordered. Before the waitress walked away I asked her, "Are there any hidden charges?"
She looked at me and smiled. "No. It's just our normal everyday price for anyone who comes in
between 6:00 - 8:00 a.m."
We've learned to be suspicious. How many times have we been duped into purchasing a special deal
only to find out that something essential wasn't included? "Oh, you wanted coffee and utensils with your
So I can understand it when people are skeptical about the promise of Easter. It sounds too good to be
true. We tell people that Jesus died on the cross to take away the sins of the world. That's means
ALL the sins. That means your sins and mine.
He paid the price. He took our punishment. He gave his life as an atonement for our sins so that we
could be forgiven. His righteousness became our righteousness and we have been given a chance to
start over. That's how much Jesus loves us.
Too many of us walk around carrying our burdens. We've lost all hope that life can be different.
Well here is the Good News. On Easter morning Christ rose from the dead. When he came out of
that tomb he promised a new life to all who would believe.
I hope you won't pass up that promise because it sounds too good to believe. God loves you and
that empty tomb is a sign that God wants to spend eternity with you. So let's praise God together
as we sing of his resurrection and his love.
Happy Easter! See you in church.
