The View From Above
May 23, 2018
I awoke with a start. It was just after five in the morning. He was
fumbling around in the dark. Every so often I heard him say something
under his breath. I could sense the frustration.
We were in Houston on our short-term mission trip. The cabins we
were staying in were cramped. Everyone was trying to be on their
best behavior. But sometimes things spiraled out of control.
I could tell he wasn't a happy camper. I was hoping he would just
give up and go away. I know that doesn't sound very "Christian."
Some days, especially when you're tired, grace is hard to come by.
When he finally gave up and left, I laid there thinking about what
had happened. He could've turned on the light and saved himself
some aggravation. He didn't because he was being considerate.
There are often two sides to every story. We only see our side.
Our judgments are based on what we see. As a result, we often
miss the big picture. An old poem, "The Weaver," came to mind.
It goes like this: "My life is but a weaving between my Lord and me.
I cannot choose the colors. He weaves so skillfully. Sometimes He weaves
sorrow and I in foolish pride, forget He sees the upper, and I the underside."
Not ‘til the loom is silent and the shuttles cease to fly, will God
unroll the canvas and explain the reasons why. The dark threads
are as needful, in the Weaver’s skillful hands, as the threads of gold
and silver, in the pattern He has planned.
Proverbs 14:29 says, "Whoever is slow to anger has great
understanding..." It is a reminder to slow down, withhold judgment,
and try to see the big picture. Life is better that way. It means you
won't be fumbling in the dark quite so often.
God Bless! See you in church.
