The Sweet Aroma of Christ
September 28, 2016
I think it is the food that gets me when I go to the Big E or any of the local fairs.
There is something about it that seems exotic and foreign to every day life. I'm not
just talking about fried oreos and blooming onions. Even the hot dogs taste better.
At the Woodstock Fair I always head for the booth with corn on the cob. At the Lebanon
Fair everyone talks about the clam fritters. At the Washington County Fair I fell in love
with the Strawberry Shortcake. Food is everywhere. Temptations abound.
I heard at a Weight Watchers meeting that we often builds strong emotional ties
with food. The taste, the smell, and even the touch tap into the deep recesses of
our brains. Think about it: Cotton candy, fried dough and fudge all tend to call our names.
On Monday I succumbed to the call. I bought a slice of peanut butter chocolate
fudge at the Big E. It was very good. They were right. Whenever I see fudge, I think
of my natural mother. It brings back memories of when I was six or seven years old.
She always made fudge. So as I walked through the exhibits eating the gooey delight
it felt like she was right there with me. I don't remember a lot about her but it seems like
fudge is something that triggers these memories to come back. It felt good.
I believe something similar thing happens when we gather at the Lord's Table. The
bread and the cup are powerful reminders of how much Jesus loved us. The elements
helps us recall the sacrifice he made on the cross. His body broken. His blood shed.
The good news is that it isn't just a memory. The Scriptures tell us that Jesus is alive.
He comes to us whenever we call his name. As the verse of my favorite hymn declares,
"He walks with me, he talks with me and tells me I am his own!"
So don't just invite Jesus to sit with you at meals when you say grace. He's more than
a memory. Invite him to join you every day. Invite him to walk with you and you will
forever be surrounded by the sweet aroma of Christ!
God bless. See you in church!
