Dear Friends,

I will never forget the look on her face when she told me my grade.  She had a
smile when she began.  “I gave you an A in menu planning, cooking, sewing,
ironing, budgeting and class participation. You were a joy to have in class.”

“Having said that Cal,” she said and then paused.  A deep frown replaced the
smile.  She continued, “I had to bring your grade down to an A-/B+ because you
didn’t do very well with clean-up.  That’s part of the course too.

That conversation took place almost forty years ago.  I think of it often.  I’m
not very good at cleaning.  That’s why what happened this week surprised me.
I had the job of putting the finishing touches on the cleaning job at our house.

As I walked away from it I had to thank my friend, Lisa.  She had done an
amazing job on the first floor.  I knew that the second floor was mine.  I was
overwhelmed.  That’s when she said, “It’s easy.  You can do it.  Take it one
step at a time.”

She spent the next several minutes explaining what she had done and what
I needed to do.  Then she said, “Just take your time.  Focus on one room
at a time.  Take it step by step.”  So for four hours on Tuesday morning that’s
exactly what I did.

As I walked away from the job feeling satisfied, it struck me that the same is
true with life. Sometimes we get overwhelmed with all that is happening.  We
let our anxiety paralyze us and or weakness define us.

We need to slow down, refine our focus and take it step by step.  The good
news is that we are not alone.  God is with us.  He has promised to be there
when we call his name.  There is anything that you and God can't do.

One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Philippians 4:13.  It reads, "I can
do all things through him who gives me strength."  So whatever challenge
you are facing today, I am sure that if you take it step by step, that you and
God can handle it.

God bless! See you in church.
