I looked down at the dog and immediately wished I didn't have to do what
I was doing. I am a coward. She looked up at me with great big, questioning
eyes. She whimpered a bit. I could almost hear her say, "Why? I thought
you loved me!"
Very few people like to do the hard things in life. We tend to choose the easy
road. We avoid confrontation. We don't like controversy. We live by old
sayings like, "We go along, to get along." My personal favorite is "Don't
rock the boat."
My job last Thursday was to hold the dog down so that my daughter, the
veterinarian, could draw blood from her. Anna flinched. My heart sank.
I knew it had to be done. I wished it was someone else who was doing the
It was over in a minute. I let go and the dog jumped up. A few minutes later
she was back kissing me. All was forgiven. I started thinking that maybe I had
made the whole thing harder than it had to be because I let my feelings get
in the way.
Maybe that's why some of us hesitate to share our faith with others? We have
been made to think that by sharing our story, we are doing something that is
hurtful, or even worse, hateful. By our very nature we don't want to do that.
Sometimes what we view as being mean isn't cruel at all. When it was done,
my daughter thanked me and told me that she thought I'd make a good
technician. It was then I realized that I was actually a big help. Anna's
health depended on it.
The same is true when it comes to sharing God's story. Christmas remind
us of the depth of God's love. God didn't just mail it in. He came in person.
In the weeks ahead, we have the opportunity to share the true meaning of
Christmas with our friends and family.
It's not about Black Friday. It is about a love so deep and broad, forgiving
and hopeful that it met us in a stable. That's what Christmas is all about.
So don't be afraid. Be a blessing. Go out and share the Good News.
God bless! See you in church.
