Seeing God in Every Photo
December 28, 2016
I know I shouldn't have done it. Every once a while the little kid in me
takes over. I was walking through Times Square on Tuesday. There
were thousands of people there from all over the world.
I noticed that so many of them had their cameras and phones out. They
were marking the day in the Big Apple by taking "selfies." It was as if
they wanted to tell the world that they were there.
The first time it happened almost by accident. A couple was taking a photo.
I walked behind them just as they snapped the picture. I smiled. Whoops!
Someday they will wonder who that man was with a big smile on his face.
That's all it took. Next thing I knew I was photobombing one group after
another. Old people, young people, couples, families. No one was immune.
I was in the background of every photo taken for a good fifteen minutes.
Having had my fun, I walked away. Then it hit me. What would happen if
instead of trying to be in an actual photograph, I tried to be a positive
influence in the lives of the people I met along the way.
The Scriptures tell us to love our neighbors. I can't think of a better way to
do that than by performing a random act of kindness. Doing so honors both
God and our neighbors at the same time. That's the way God shows his
love for us.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if countless strangers were able to look back on
their day and feel that someone had blessed them? What if it caused them to
pause and give thanks to God? It could start something big!
Let's try it in 2017. Start looking for ways to do something nice for the
people who you meet along the way. In doing so, they might just look
back and realize that God was in the picture with them in their most precious
God bless. See you in church.
