Preach It With Your Love
January 20, 2016
He came in quietly. He looked around and said, "Can anybody help?" I don't know
how many heard him. A few of us looked up. He was slightly disheveled and his clothes
were dirty and worn. He leaned on his walker and repeated his plea.
"A nickel, a dime, how about a little food? Anything will help." I heard his request and
tried to look away. I wanted to ignore him. Yet, like a moth drawn to a bright light, I
couldn't help myself. I looked at him and tried to figure out if the need was real.
We are such cynics. We have been hardened by the number of people who try to scam
us and take advantage of our good nature. This man had long, curly, black hair. He
wore dark glasses. I wondered if he was really blind.
It seems like every time I go into the city I have an encounter like this. This time I was
on the subway. "Can you help?" he said. I'm not rich but I have been blessed. I
haven't had to ask someone for money recently but there was a time when I needed help.
Maybe that's why I reached in my pocket. I pulled out a little cash and gave it to the
man. Then one by one five other people did the same. With each donation he nodded
and said, "God bless you." At the next stop he moved on and was soon gone.
As I got off the train the words of Jesus came to mind. He said, "When you have done it
for the least of these, you have done it to me." Without even knowing it, I found myself
preaching a sermon. Maybe that's why the others followed suit.
People often ask me how they can serve the Lord. Jesus gave us the answer. He told us
to love God and to love our neighbor. Talk is cheap. Anyone can say, "I love you."
Real love can be seen when a need is recognized and met with an act of generosity.
So go out do something for someone with no expectation of anything in return. Then
you will be doing what St. Francis suggested when he said, "Preach the Gospel at all
times, and when necessary, use words." Don't say it. Just do it.
God bless! See you in church.
