Praising God for the Gifts of Love and Friendship
June 6, 2018
I had just finished my workout at the YMCA when I got the call.
I sat in stunned silence and didn't know what to say. I couldn't
believe what I was hearing. My brain couldn't process the news.
You've heard it asked, "Where were you when... you heard John
Kennedy was shot... when the astronauts landed on the moon... when
the towers fell." These are moments in life when time stops.
That's why we remember where we were when we heard the news.
All the mundane matters that fill our days, all the problems that seem
so big, all the political garbage fades to the background and our minds
focus on what is most important in life.
Life is about relationships. Hank was my friend. The news of his
sudden passing this week came as a swift reminder that life is gift.
It needs to be cherished. We never know how many days we have.
I will never forget what my dad said to me the day my mother died.
With tears in his eyes he said, "Maybe I shouldn't have loved your
mother so much. Then it wouldn't hurt so badly today."
He had a point. When we open ourselves up to friendship and love,
there's always a price to pay. We give these special people a bit of
our soul. It leaves us vulnerable. The cost is a broken heart.
I told him what I have told many people since. "Dad, if you had never
loved mom, you would never have known the great joy you had with
her for forty one years. You had a gift that many people only wish
for in this life."
You see, it's not the things we have that make life precious. It is the
people in our lives that are the real treasures. So look around you.
Love the people in your life. Enjoy each day and give God the glory
for the blessings we have in knowing and loving them.
God Bless! See you in church.
