Our Man on the Inside
                                                                            September 1, 2016

Dear Friends,

Rules.  I know that they are there for our own good.  The lady behind the
window told me that they are just trying to protect us from identity theft.
"It's pretty common these days," she added as if to strengthen her case
for sending us away empty handed.

The Department of Motor Vehicles is known for their rigged adherence to
rules.  They go by the book.  You either have your papers in order or you
don't.  They don't want to hear your story.  There is no room for compassion.
It's all about the letter of the law.

Lori and I have been running around trying to get what we need to apply for
our new licenses and to register our cars.  VIN checks, original social security
cards, duplicate titles are on the list.  Who would have known it could be so
complicated?  I wished we had an inside man.

The only consolation we have comes from hearing that it’s not personal.
We have heard countless stories about nightmarish interactions with the DMV.
I can't imagine the horror if they were actually out to get us.  They aren't.
This is normal.

I have to confess that I don't like it when someone tells me that I can't have
what I want.  I don't like rules that get in the way of my personal goals and
ambitions.  It's human nature.  It is the same trait that got Adam and Eve in
trouble.

God said, "No." They went around him and broke the one rule he gave them.
We've been dealing with rules ever since. We don't like it but God said that if
you want to fulfill your role in this relationship you have to live according to
the rules.

The problem is that the rules have proven to be too difficult for us to follow.
It seems like no matter how hard we try, we keep coming up short. The good
news is that we aren't on our own in this quest to make things right with God.

We have an advocate in Jesus who knew what needed to be done.  He stepped
up.  He gave his life to pay the price for our failures.  In doing so he got us back
on the road to a loving relationship to God.  Now we have a license to live to the
glory of God.  Thank you Jesus for being our inside man!

God bless!  See you in church.
