Our Hope Breaks Through the Darkness                         April 16, 2014

Dear friends,

I have to be honest with you. I think I would have flipped out. Lori said she wasn't
sure what to think when she saw all the fire engines on our street. Then she
realized it was the house right next to ours that was on fire.

It was one of the moments where anxiety moves to relief and then to a sadness for
those involved. The fire spread quickly through the house. Thankfully those inside
the house got out safely. By the time the fire was out, the building appeared to be
a total loss. Four families had lost everything.

I didn't get home until well after everyone had left the scene. As I looked at the
burnt out frame of the house, I was reminded of how quickly life can change. Like
that mid-morning a year ago in Boston. Like that day a month ago at Fort Hood.
Life doesn't come with any guarantees.

Jesus was someone who understood this. One day he was on top of the world. He
was riding into Jerusalem and it felt like the whole world was cheering for him. By
Friday morning he was standing alone before Herod, and then Pilate and then an
angry mob.

You know the story. Everyone deserted him. Jesus even wondered if God had
forgotten him. He felt so alone. We hear that story and most of us can identify with
it. We have lived through some difficult Fridays of our own.

It may have been our job, or our marriage, or our life savings, or our health that
seemed to desert us. We woke up one morning anticipating that everything was
under control. Within hours our whole world turned into a raging inferno and
thoughts of a happy tomorrow went up in smoke.

The Gospel tells us that God wants to turn all of our Fridays into Sundays. No
matter what is happening in your life right now, God can turn it around. The
message of Easter is that God's love has come to shine through the darkness to
give us hope. He loves you and me. So reach out and embrace him so he can show
you the way.

God bless. Happy Easter! See you in church.
