Make a Splash in Worship          September 24, 2014

Dear friends,

Splash! I get these crazy ideas every once in a while. "Let's do something special
for our Back to Church Sunday Barbecue," I said. Splash! I can honestly say that
being in a dunk tank was not on my bucket list. Splash! Yet there I was on Sunday
afternoon.

The kids had smiles from ear to ear as they reveled in the opportunity to dunk the
Pastor. Even my wife, Lori, got in on the fun. To make sure she didn't miss, she
lobbed a basketball at the target. Everyone roared at that. They were all having
fun at my expense.

It may not have been very dignified for a middle age pastor to be in a dunk tank
but I had a blast. I was having as much fun as the kids and their parents. The
whole thing took on a life of its own and added some wonderful memories for
all of us.

As I thought about the events of the day. it struck me that ministry is really about
moments like the ones we shared together in the back yard of the church. Ministry
happens when we come together in Christ and build relationships.  It is not just a
Sunday morning thing.

We often make the mistake of limiting our idea of worship to a set liturgy or
practice in the church. Yet worship is not a once a week thing that is scheduled
for a certain time and place. Jesus told us that whenever two or more of us are
together, that he will be there too!

Worship happens whenever we invite God into our lives and spend time
together. Worship happens when we come together to feed the hungry, to
visit the sick and to minister to those in prison. Splash! It happens when we
celebrate his love in the midst of children too.

So where will you worship God this week?  Will it be in the car on the way to
dance rehearsal? Will you do it around the dinner table with the family?  Will
it be in church on Sunday morning? I pray that you will make a splash wherever
you choose to do so!

God bless! See you in church.
