The mountains were to my left as I drove out of the city. I was awestruck by the
sight of them. I was attending a conference just north of Denver so on Friday
afternoon I decided to drive out to Estes Park and check out the mountains.
I was struck with the jaw dropping beauty of the snow topped peaks as we
made our way though the Rocky Mountain National Forest. I was holding my breath
around every corner as we wove through the mountains on snake-like curves.
I looked down at the vistas below. They were amazing but a chill came over
me at the thought of going over the edge. The guard rails were practically
non-existent. Thankfully, we wouldn't be up here after dark, or so we thought.
Two hours later we reached the backside of the mountains. It was late and our
decision to keep going down the other side meant that we'd have to cross back
over the mountains in the dark of night. Boy, had we messed up!
In this fallen world we live in, we often find ourselves creeping through the
darkness trying to get home. Too often our plans fail to emerge the way we
envision them. The good news is that the Bible tells us that God already knows.
I like that verse in the twenty third psalm. It says, "Even though I walk through
the darkest valley, I will not be afraid for you are with me." It is a reminder that
God is with us on our worst days. He is with us even when we can't see him.
In Psalm 121 we read, "I lift up my eyes to the mountains. Where does my help
come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth."
That's a good thing to remember when you get caught out. Look up!
Look up when you are afraid. Look up when you are feeling overwhelmed. Look
up when you are lost. Look up when you don't know what to do. The one who
made the mountains, in all their glory, will be there for you and me. So look up!
God bless. See you in church.
