Look For the Big Guy
March 22, 2017
I kept looking for him everywhere. I wasn't quite sure if I would recognize
him. After all, the only time I ever saw his face was on a baseball card nearly
twenty years ago. Darryl Strawberry was scheduled to be the keynote speaker
in our afternoon session.
We got there just as the Men's conference was starting. We didn't get great
seats. I tried scanning the crowd. From my vantage point in the back all I
could see was a sea of heads. During the break I kept my eyes open just in
case I bumped into him.
"Was that him?" I asked myself. There were a number of men who fit the
bill. I was too embarrassed to ask, "Are you Darryl Strawberry?" So I
just kept looking and wondering. He could have walked right past me and
I might have missed him.
I positioned myself outside the main hall hoping to catch a glimpse of him.
I know. It's silly. Twenty five hundred men from all over New England
walked in and out and I couldn't even identify the star in the crowd.
That's when Jonathan returned.
He had just seen Darryl in the lunch line. He was all excited. He stood
next to him. Walked behind him and grabbed his sandwich. They even
exchanged a word or two. Jonathan remarked, "Boy, is he tall. You want
to find him? Look for the big guy."
I had been so intent on finding him that I never really moved. That's when
it hit me. Many of us do the same thing trying to find God. We stake out
our position and wait for him to show up. The truth is that God is
everywhere. We just need to look.
The problem is that we don't always recognize him. God can be found in
a stranger's smile or the embrace of a neighbor. He can be heard in a baby's
laughter or a sympathy card from a friend. He is in every act of kindness,
every stand for justice.
The good news is that you don't have to go looking for God. He will find
you in the everyday things you do. Whether at work, school or play, just
look around and he will be there. Actually, you might want to look up.
He's bigger than you think.
God bless! See you in church.
