Living the Sweet Life

  July 27, 2016

Dear Friends,

It looked delicious.  I immediately began to salivate as Ken brought out
Laura's Ice Cream Sundae Cake.  I can never resist the sweet temptation
of anything chocolate.  This was going to be the perfect ending to our weekly
barbecue at church.

That's when I saw her.  Out of the corner of my eye I noticed Nancy getting
into her car to leave.  Pangs of guilt spread all over me as Ken handed me a
bowl with the sweet dessert.  I immediately dropped it in the seat beside me
like a hot potato.

She drove over to the corner of the building.  She stopped and got out of the
car.  Nancy smiled, said hello, and started walking right toward me.  I was
busted.  She then headed around us as she relayed the fact that she had
forgotten something inside.

We joked about it after she left.  It hasn't been easy having Weight Watcher
meetings in the church building.  Everyone knows that I'm a member.  A lot
of my friends question anything I put in my mouth.  I regularly hear, "Should
you be eating that?"

The truth is that as a Weight Watcher I don't need to feel guilty when I enjoy
a sweet treat.  The program is all about learning to eat foods that are nutritious
and to create a pattern that will lead to a healthy lifestyle.  An occasional treat
can be built into the program.  Moderation is the key.

The same is true of the Christian lifestyle.  The apostle Paul says “I have the
right to do anything.  But not everything is beneficial.  I have the right to do
anything but I will not be mastered by anything."  The key is to live in such
a way that you bring glory to God.

A lot of people think that faith is all about following rules.  Do this.  Do that.
In reality it is about honoring God with our lives.  It is making choices that
reflect the love and grace of God in everything we say and do.  The Bible tells
us how to do it.

Faith was never meant to be about guilt.  It is all about God. Faith tells us
that God so loved the world that he sent his son.  Faith opens a lifestyle that
leads to health, happiness and wholeness.  So go ahead and live the sweet life.
To God be the glory!

God bless!  See you in church.
