Living the Dream
January 16, 2017
As I approached the Rhodes on the Pawtuxet Restaurant for the annual
Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship breakfast, I was looking for
familiar faces . I was a little nervous. That's when I saw her. She waved
as I came across the lot.
I didn't recognize her but she had a big smile on her face. I didn't know
if she was another guest like me or someone I knew from church connections.
That's when I noticed the badge. Turns out she was an official greeter for
Then a funny thing happened. A tall, handsome man with a big smile
crossed my path. I don't know where he came from, but his long deliberate
steps led him to intersect my way and I ended up following him onto the
That's when she took a step forward to meet him. She turned, opened the
door, and ushered him inside leaving me a little embarrassed with the
realization that the smile and greeting had not been for me. What was
I thinking? Who am I?
I watched as he stopped to greet people on his way through the lobby,
shaking hands as he went. As he turned I recognized him. It was
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. No wonder he received the big welcome.
He was a somebody.
Soon the festivities began. I sat at table with my friends. Before long
the keynote speaker, Dr. Aidsand Wright-Riggins, began his remarks.

everybody was a somebody.
It got me thinking. What would happen if all of us looked at people we
met as being somebody important? What if we greeted them with an open
heart and made them feel special? That's what Dr. King did. As a matter
of fact, that is what Jesus did.
We were created in the image of God. Dr. King was right. So let's live the
dream. The world will change if we see each other as God sees us.
Everybody is somebody because God said so. So let's go out and bless
God bless. See you in church.
