Listening For God's Voice
                                                                                   February 24, 2016

Dear Friends,

"A time machine?" he asked. "Why do you need a time machine for Easter?"
I laughed.  Two years ago the guys built a tomb for me.  I like to find ways to
connect my words with an image that will bring home the point of my message.

On special days like Easter I go all out.  The creative juices begin to flow.  That's
when the crazy ideas become real.  You never know how it is going to happen.
This time it began to sprout as we talked about plans for our Vacation Bible School.

We had eight different themes to choose from.  One was titled, "Blast from the Past!"
Josh, all of nine years old, was at the meeting with his mother. His ears perked up
when he heard it.  "Maybe we could have a time machine!" he said.  I looked at
him and responded, "That would be pretty cool."

Unfortunately, we ended up choosing a different program but as I began laying
out my series of sermons for Lent it came back to me.  "I wish we could go back
to the day Jesus rose from the dead?"  Imagine being there when he came out
of the tomb.

That's when I decided we needed a time machine for Easter.  Some would say that
it was the little boy in me that led me to this decision.  I believe it was the gentle
nudge of the Holy Spirit.  That is how God most often chooses to speak to us.

When the idea to visit an old friend comes to mind or when you suddenly think
of something you ought to do, that still small voice that calls you to act is the
same voice that Elijah heard when he was on the mountain.

The Apostle John says that God is love. The Apostle Paul describes love as being
patient and kind, not insisting on its own way. It is so much more than a noisy
gong or a clanging symbol. So when God speaks, he invites.  He calls.  He nudges.

What has God been calling you to do? During this Lenten season I'd like to invite
you to slow down and listen for that still, small voice. You may not be called to
build a time machine, but it may end up leading you to the time of your life.

God bless! See you in church.
