Like a Breath of Fresh Air                    June 11, 2014

Dear friends,

I have got skunks on my mind today.  I wanted to write about something else but
every story led me back to thinking about my skunk.  You see about a month ago
one of these pesky little critters took up residence under our porch.

The smell was a problem right from the start.  We didn't know what was causing it.
We thought the dog had gotten sprayed.  It wasn't her.  We thought maybe a
skunk had gotten into our basement.  We searched and there was nothing there.

About that time we hired a painter to do some exterior work at the house.  When I
came home one night he told me that he heard a pssst! and then smelled something
from beneath the porch as he was working there.  He said it was definitely a skunk!

So how do you get rid of a skunk?  At first we hoped it would simply go away.  No
luck there!  So Lori went on the internet and read several articles on the subject.  I
went on Facebook and asked my friends.

We got all kinds of suggestions.  Some were very funny.  Others were helpful.  We
were a little overwhelmed though so we tried using air fresheners to mask the
smell.  All that did was make it worse.  To get rid of the smell we needed an expert
in animal control to handle the source of our problem.

It struck me that the same is true of sin in our lives.  When we get caught up in sin,
we end up bathed in a stench that permeates everything we do.  We can't run from
it.  It leads to broken relationships, addictive behaviors, loss of control and a web
of deceit and lies.

The good news is that we have someone to call when our lives are a mess.  Jesus
came to take away our sin.  He goes right for the source of our problem.  He
forgives our sin and gives us a new heart and a new life.  When he is finished it is
like a breath of fresh air.

Praise God!  Be blessed.  See you in church.
