Let's Turn the Lights On
                                                                                    February 10, 2016

Dear Friends,

I was out for my nightly walk with the dogs.  I turned into my driveway.  As I
walked past my car the interior lights came on and I heard the doors unlock.
I was startled at first.  I jumped back.  I looked around.  I wondered if someone
was trying to punk me.

That's when I remembered that my Prius was equipped with smart key technology
and keyless entry. The key in my pocket set it off. It is a great feature on a cold
day or when you have your hands full. It's like the car is just waiting for you to
arrive.

Now I expect that of my dogs. They greet me with hugs and kisses every night.
Robert Wagner, the famous actor, was quoted saying, "A dog will teach you
unconditional love. If you can have that in your life, things won't be too bad."

The truth is that most of us are used to being insulted, mistreated and ignored
as we go through our days. That is the nature of life. It's everywhere. Most people
are so focused on meeting their own needs that they barely have time to
acknowledge us.

When someone actually smiles at you or takes the time to greet you, it comes as a
surprise. Maybe we need to stop and reevaluate our priorities.  My dogs have it
right. The people we meet along the way are meant to be cherished and loved.

I'd like to challenge you during this Lenten season. Slow down and take notice
of the people you meet as you walk through your days. Share a smile. Take time
to listen to what they are saying. Give a hug. Treat each one as if God had sent
them your way.

I have to warn you though. A few might think you are playing a joke on them.
They won't be expecting it. Do it anyway! And when the shock wears off, remind
them that God loves them and encourage them to pass it on.

Who knows? If enough of us do this for the next seven weeks, we might just
start a revolution and doors will be opened and the lights might go on all
around us. We can only hope.

God bless! See you in church.
