Let Your Light Shine

Dear Friends,

I had to stop when I saw her photo.  I knew that woman.  Susan was the head of the cardiac
rehabilitation program at the Backus Hospital when I was a patient there.  She was there to
encourage me each week as I rode my way back to health.

It was thirteen years ago.  I hadn't thought about her until I read the obituary in the hospital
newsletter.  A flood of memories immediately came flowing back to me.  I sat there in stunned
silence.  She was there when I needed someone to care.

It's funny how people often show up in our lives for a time and then we lose touch with them.
It might be the cashier at the grocery store or the teller at the bank.  You see them regularly and
their smile brightens your day.

They come like angels to walk with us in the mundane moments of life.  Yet they bring gifts that
linger long after they are gone.  We all have these people that have walk on roles in the story of
our lives.  Each one adds to the richness of our souls.

I thank God for people like Susan.  She was good at her job.  Her compassion and dedication to
her profession left a legacy that goes far beyond what any of us will ever know.  God used her in
her role at the hospital and she blessed people like me.

The truth is that God wants to send all of us into the world to bring his light and love to those in need.
We live in a fallen world.  Just turn on the television and it's obvious. People are looking for hope
and we are the bearers of the Good News.

You don't have to be a preacher to do the job.  The apostle Paul told us to simply be a presence
wherever God has placed us.  He says in Colossians 3: "Whatever you do, work at it with all your
heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters."

So whether you work at the hair salon, in the public schools, as a police officer or as a volunteer
for the PTO, look for ways to bless the people God sends your way.  They will remember you
and you will find a blessing in knowing you have served the Lord.

God bless! See you in church.
