It is always the little things that get you. The other day I tried to send my sermon
from the computer to the printer. I plugged in the USB cord, made sure the printer
was turned on and then pushed print. Nothing happened.
They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and
expecting different results. I am sure glad that someone wasn't filming me. It would
have made a terrific training video for a psychology department somewhere.
I turned off the printer. I turned it back on. I reconnected the USB cord. I checked
the power supply. Then I hit print again. The more I tried to fix it, the more frustrated
I got when it didn't appear to be working. So I did it over again. And again. And again.
I finally gave up. I told myself that maybe I wasn't supposed to give that message that
evening. Instead of printing it out I made a few notes and decided I was going to preach
from the notes instead of my manuscript. Problem solved.
Later that evening I went into the church office. There were papers on the floor. It
was my sermon. It wasn't just one copy. There were seven copies. That's when it hit
me. I had sent the sermon to the wireless printer in the other room by mistake.
Like I said, it's always the little things. Jesus understood that. Too many of us want to
do the big things. We save up, we wait, we plan, and we get ready for the right time. The
problem is that in doing so we miss the opportunities God has put before us.
Jesus said. "Love your neighbor." Every day we meet people who could use some
encouragement. Spending five minutes with a child or an elderly neighbor might just
make their day. A smile could change someone's outlook. It doesn't take much to create
a ripple effect.
It sounds kind of crazy doesn't it? So take it from someone who knows crazy: When
you look for ways to bless others, you will see miracles happen. It all begins with our
faithfulness in little things.
God bless. See you in church.
