It Has Your Name On It

 December 21, 2016
Dear Friends,

My daughter's dog, Brie, has an amazing ability.  She can pick out the good
stuff from among an assortment of gifts.  Last week I came home and found
her with the dog toys we had wrapped and put under the Christmas tree for her.

The gifts were open and sitting in the middle of the floor.  She was as happy as
can be.  With tail wagging, she grabbed one and brought it to me as if to say,
"Look what I found!"  She was so proud of her accomplishment.

The next day she only opened one gift. She picked out a pink bunny hat. She
loves bunnies. I don't know how she knew what it was. It was almost as if she
had X-ray vision. She hasn't opened another once since then.

I wish I had that kind of sensitivity to things.  I would like to be able to pick
out and open only those things meant for me.  I often get caught up in
problems that aren't mine and drama that belongs to someone else.  Does
that happen to you?

The truth is that it happens a lot around the holidays.  So many things call
for our attention.  We get so busy doing things that by the time we get to
Christmas we are worn out.  We don't really enjoy it.  We miss the gift with
our name on it.

As you re-read the Christmas story, notice how the shepherds understood
that the gift in the Bethlehem stable was meant for them.  Witness how the
wise men side stepped around King Herod's plot and went to worship the
newborn king.

They rushed to see it.  Like Brie, they knew that a gift had been given that
was designed with them in mind.  You see, Christmas isn't about parties and
buying gifts.  It is about opening our hearts to receive the gift of God's love.

When you look under the tree this year, take a moment to think about the
most precious gifts God has given you: Life, health, family and the gift of his
presence.  All are given to bless you so you can be a blessing.  Merry Christmas!

God bless!  See you in church.
