Help With the Wolf Inside You
June 14, 2017
"The werewolf appeared again last night," he said. When he noticed my
puzzled look he added, "Sometimes I feel like a werewolf. I eat like crazy
at night and then wake up in the morning and ask, 'What did I do?'"
I laughed. I could relate. I'd been there. I'd done that.
Arthur and I have been working out in the morning. I want to get in
shape. Along with the exercise, we often talk about food and nutrition.
He told me that his weakness is late night snacking. He said "Werewolves
are lucky though. There's only one full moon a month."
I know what Arthur is talking about. I can be having a great day only to
see it fall apart just before bedtime. That's when I think of the apostle
Paul. He says in Romans 7, "I do not understand my own actions. For
I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate."
Life is difficult. I'll never forget my friend Leon's response when I invited
him to join Weight Watchers a few years ago. He said, "I don't need
people telling me how to lose weight. I can do it on my own." I replied,
"We wouldn't be fat if that was true."
Too often we try going it alone and end up sabotaging ourselves. We all
have our Achilles heel. It may not be food that gets you. It could be
something else. You may think you have no control over it. Well sometimes
we just need a little help from our friends.
The Scriptures suggest that we were created to be in community. Some
people see asking for help as a sign of weakness. In reality, it shows that
we are human. I believe God sends people into our lives to stand in the gap
and to help us to win these battles.
That's why I love the church. I met Arthur there. It is a place where we
can find people who will stand with us through life's challenges. It is a
place where faith and action go hand in hand. It is a place where prayer is
lifted up and hope is shared. And there's a place for you.
If you have been away from church, I'd like to encourage you to give it
another chance. God is calling you to come back this summer. Find a
church where you can worship. God has a place for you. You'll find
good people who will bless you and join you in your journey.
God bless! See you in church.
