He Is the Way                                            August 6, 2014

Dear friends,

“Does this train go to New Haven?” he asked. She tried to ignore him as if he was
a stranger asking her out on a first date but he asked again. The young lady
looked up with a casual indifference that you come to expect in many New Yorkers
and said, “I don’t know.”

A second person popped her head in the door and asked, “This train going to
Stamford?” Once again the young lady looked up and simply shrugged her
shoulders. I almost laughed out loud. I wanted to ask her if she knew where she
was going.

As I thought about it I was struck with the fact that an hour earlier I was in a
similar position. I was sitting on the New Jersey Transit Bus just steps away from
my daughter’s apartment. Becky assured me that it would take me to the Port
Authority Station in New York.

I have to tell you that I was in a bit of a panic as twenty minutes later the bus
passed a sign that said, “Welcome to Weehauken!” I began to wonder if I had
gotten on the wrong bus and was heading toward some isolated village deep in the
heart of New Jersey.

If someone had asked me if I was on the bus to New York I might have shrugged
my shoulders and said, “I hope so!” and sounded just as silly as that young lady.
The only difference was that I was following the directions of someone who had
been this way many times before.

I was reminded of an exchange that took place between Jesus and his disciples
shortly before his arrest and crucifixion.  He was telling the disciples that he was
going away when Thomas interrupts and says, “We don’t know where you are
going, so how can we know the way?

Jesus responds, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” The truth is that it is
easy to get lost in life. You may have your doubts. You may wonder if you are on
the right path. The truth is that when you put your faith in Christ, he will show you
the way and lead you to the good life.

God bless! See you in church.
