God's Time Machine
March 30, 2016
Imagine a world where you could step back in time. Since H. G. Wells published his famous novel,
The Time Machine in 1895, the concept of traveling forward or backward through time has captured
the imagination of children and adults alike.
I capitalized on that idea on Easter Sunday. I had a member of the church build a time machine for me.
It had blinking lights and moving antennas. The kids loved it. During the children's sermon we went
back to the day Jesus rose. It was great fun.
I've also been reading Stephen King's novel, 11/22/63. (Could it be one of those coincidences?)
It is all about a man who steps back in time with the hope of stopping the assassination of President
John F. Kennedy. He finds changing the past is not so easy.
We can dream though. My mom died tragically 44 years ago this week. I can't tell you how many
times I have wished I could go back and change what happened. If only I had known and done
something I would have been spared so much pain.
The truth is that many of us live with a degree of regret over things that have happened, burdens
we have borne, and pain that we have suffered. It is a part of life. No one gets through this world
unscathed. We have all been touched by sorrow.
That's why the message of Easter is so important to hear. We can't go back in time to change things
but God has a way of turning tragedy into triumph. Think about the death of Jesus. It was so unfair.
He didn't deserve to die.
Yet God took that cross and turned it into an instrument of salvation for the whole world. Jesus paid
the price for our sin and forgiveness became possible for all who believe. Today we can start over
and live with the love of God in our hearts.
So if we can't travel back in time to change things, maybe we can find strength in the fact that we
can make a difference by changing things going forward instead. That's how I am doing it. I am
working with God to create a world filled with hope. You can too. So hop in and let's make the
God bless. See you in church.
