God's Casting Call
March 9, 2016
I had to turn up the volume on the radio when I heard it. I only caught a few of the words
but that was all it took. There was a casting call for people in the greater Boston area for
a movie titled, Patriot's Day, starring Mark Wahlberg.
I confess that I've had this dream of being an actor since I was a teenager. It began when
I first walked out on the stage as a gangster with my friend, Leon, in our high school production
of Kiss Me Kate.
The report said they were looking for hundreds of extras. I made up my mind that I was going
to go this time. Twice, in recent years, film crews have been in town. I haven't followed through.
I tell myself I'm too busy. Yet there really is no excuse.
I wonder if this is the same thing that happens when God calls us to step out and act in faith.
I'm sure that many of us have felt that we were suppose to say or do something that would
make a difference at one time or another. Yet we back off. We make excuses.
Our faith suggests that God calls us to take part in his redemptive acts. We are called to share
the power of love, forgiveness and grace to those who are hurting and lost in the darkness of
despair. Even small roles are important to God's plan.
I am reminded of that passage in Romans 7. The Apostle Paul tells us he doesn't understand
why he fails to do what he wants to do. He confesses that he often does the exact opposite.
He concludes that it has to do with sin and our fallen nature.
I think it also happens because the devil whispers in our ear that we don't have what it takes.
We're not good enough. He points to our weakness and what we lack and that is enough to
get us to hesitate long enough to miss the opportunity.
The Good News is that in Christ we have all we need. Hebrews 13 says that God will equip us
so we can accomplish his will. So don't hesitate when you hear the call. Step up on God's
stage and say, "Here I am, Lord. What can I do?"
God bless. See you in church.
