God Will Be There to Cover You
October 19, 2016
I couldn't believe it. I didn't know what to do. I was applying the wood stain on
my back deck when a leaf came floating down and landed right in the middle of the
section I had just finished. I reached over to pluck it up. I tossed it over the side.
Just as I did that I noticed another one coming down. It was heading right for my
roller pan. Quick action on my part saved the day. Well, not really. For the next
two hours I felt like I was playing dodgeball with the falling leaves. They kept coming.
Two hours later I was finished. It had been a battle. Between the falling leaves and
the spiraling maple seeds, it was a stop and go journey. Two steps forward and one
step back. I guess the lesson to be learned is that autumn is not the best time for
As I was in the middle of this back and forth I couldn't help but think of the apostle
Paul's words. He wrote about his battle with his human nature. He knew the
difference between right and wrong but so often he was tempted to give in to sin
At one point he says, "What a wretched man am I?" and then goes on to ask who
will save him from himself? I can't tell you how many times I've sabotaged myself
by giving into my weaknesses. Like the leaves, those temptations keep falling in my lap.
Paul tells us where to look for help. He says, "Thanks be to God, who delivers me
through Jesus Christ our Lord!" Jesus is like a canopy which covers us. He helps
us overcome those things that drop into our lives and removes them before they
become a permanent stain.
So if you are battling to stay on track, I've got good news for you. You are not alone.
God is with you and he will never "leaf"you.
God bless. See you in church.
