God Doesn't Do Coincidences!
February 17, 2016
It was 5:00 a.m. I was out the door and in the car early. The rain was so heavy and fog was so
thick that I could barely see the road in front of me. It wasn't bad as I drove through town. It was
on the back roads where things got very interesting.
I nearly drove off the side of the pavement at least twice. Crawling along at just under thirty
miles per hour, I couldn't turn back. I had to get to the airport. "At least it's not snowing,"
I thought to myself. Then the rain came down even harder.
I came to a stop sign. A car approached from the left. It flew right past me. All I could see
was its tail lights as I made the turn. It slowed a bit as the fog got deeper and I caught up to
him about a mile down the road. From that point on we were bosom buddies.
It struck me at one point that I was blindly trusting this car in front of me. I was counting on it
to deliver me safely through the darkness. If it drove off the road I was going with it. That's when
I said I prayer. "God help me get where I am going."
I am happy to say that I made it to the airport and had a wonderful trip down to visit my dad.
It wasn't until I got home that I began to reflect on that whole experience. The truth is that it
was a perfect example of the way God moves in our lives.
I've often said that there are no such things as coincidences. Things happen for a reason. On
that foggy morning that car came along at just the right time to lead me through the darkness.
The funny thing is that I prayed after the car was already there.
That's how it works with God. He sends us the help, the strength, the guidance, the forgiveness
we need even before we even ask for it. That's the story of the cross. It is at the heart of Lent.
God provided our salvation before we even knew we needed it.
So next time you find yourself on the backside of a blessing that comes out of nowhere, look up
and say, "Thank you God!"
God bless. See you in church.
