Gifts From God
March 2, 2016
I sat there in the church with tears running down my face. I didn't know her that
well but she had been a presence in my life for over twenty years. I'd see her at events
where my girls were dancing. We often said hello and shared pleasantries.
Over the years we had the chance to sit down and talk a few times. We'd compared
notes about life, what it was like growing up, and how important family and faith
were. She always had a smile on her face. It brightened my day whenever I saw her.
Some people show up in your life as a gift from God. Too often we don't realize it
until they are gone. I'm reminded of the Emmaus Road story in Luke 24. Two
disciples were walking home feeling quite discouraged after the crucifixion of Jesus.
A stranger comes up beside them. They begin to talk and everything changes. There
is something about him that brings hope and comfort. Then he disappears. Looking
back on it the disciples say, "Didn't our hearts burn within us while he talked to us?"
When was the last time your heart burned when you were with someone? There is
an old saying, "People come and go. Everyone that has been in your life has been
there for a reason." Another says, "We don't meet people by accident. God meant
them to be there."
I guess what I am trying to say today is simply this: Cherish the people that God
has put in your life. It is not a coincidence that you feel blessed every time you see
them. It is not an accident that they are there to challenge you to grow and expand
They are reminders that God is always with us. He sends them to put a human face
to his presence. So make it a point during Lent this year to slow down, to bless the
people in your life, and give thanks to God. For they are his gift to you.
God bless. See you in church.
