Get Off the Couch
                                                                                            April 20, 2016

Dear Friends,

The Facebook headline read, "This 40 year old just qualified for the Olympics!"  I had to laugh
as a young friend chided her mother with the post.  She said, "Mom you are a slacker.  Two
hours sitting on the couch and your back hurts."

Oksana Chusovitina's story has a movie like quality.  Her career outlived the country which she
began competing with twenty five years ago.  In 1992 she won gold as part of a team effort and
went on to win medals with both Germany and Uzbekistan.

She married an Olympic Wrestler. Her son fought Leukemia and won.  She credits the
international gymnastic community for giving her strength in the time of trial.  She has
threatened to retire but the thrill of competition keeps calling her back.

Her legacy goes beyond the five gymnastic skills that now bear her name.  She has mentored a
generation of young gymnasts and is an inspiration to those who are competing for the first
time. At forty years old the fire still burns within her.

I hope that I still have that kind of drive, that undying energy, when I reach an age that others
define as too old to serve. Job 12:12 says, "Is not wisdom found among the aged?  Does not
long life bring understanding?"

Rev. Eugene Bronson taught me that lesson.  He was retired when I met him in 1983. He was
crippled with arthritis and I thought his ministry was over.  When I mentioned that to him he
looked at me and said, "Oh, I'm not done yet."

"My ministry has changed." he explained.  "I can't run like I used to but every day I sit in this
chair. I bow my head and pray for the people on my list.  That's how I serve the Lord now."

Rev. Bronson inspired me that day and showed me a new reality.  You are never too old to
serve the Lord!  So I want to echo my young friend's comment and urge you to get off the
couch and get back in the game.  God still has something for you to do!

God bless. See you in church!
