Focus on the Blessings
September 15, 2016
I felt like a bird that was set free from it's cage. I drove out of the Stop & Shop Plaza and hit
the gas as I got back on the main road. I had been bottled up in traffic in that plaza for an hour.
It was frustrating. I didn't know if I was ever going to escape.
They were doing construction on the main road. One of the two access roads was closed. The
second access point was controlled by a stop light. The light was useless. Cars were stopped in
the intersection and blocking the exit. I wanted to scream.
Later, as I was driving down the highway at 65 miles an hour, it struck me that the way I felt in that
traffic mirrored what a lot of people have been feeling lately. We've lived through some tumultuous
times. People's emotions have been boiling over.
Yet, here I was traveling down the open road. I looked up and thanked God. I could have replayed
that situation in the parking lot over and over again in my mind. I could have stewed about it and
let it fester like an open wound.
Instead of letting that anger control me I decided to focus on the blessing of that beautiful day God
had given me. The sun was out and I was driving along the shore . I could have carried that baggage
with me for the rest of the day. I chose not to.
Sometimes we need to let things go. We need to stop looking at everything as an affront to us.
We get offended so easily. Instead, we ought to look around and see the blessings God has put
in our lives. We need to learn to appreciate the little things.
One of my favorite hymns says, "Count your many blessings, name them one by one; Count your
many blessings, see what God hath done; Count your blessings, name them one by one, And it will
surprise you what the Lord hath done."
We take God's blessings for granted. So instead of noting the times you were wronged, why not
start making entries into a gratitude journal? Write down the things you are thankful for. Before long
God will turn your anger into a heart filled with love and thanksgiving.
God bless! See you in church.
