Better Than Chocolate!
May 26, 2016
I almost fell over in my seat when the tour guide said that it takes 50,000
cows to produce the milk needed for one day's worth of chocolate at the
Hershey factory in Pennsylvania. Over a thousand farms are tapped to
secure that amount of milk.
The numbers were mind boggling. The company puts out 60 million Hershey
kisses a day and 5 million peanut butter cups. My ears perked up when I
heard him say that the best job in the factory was in quality control.
Quality control has the job of sampling the chocolate. They are there to
insure the quality is up to the Hershey standard. With a smile on his face
he said, "And there are openings right now." Talk about heaven on earth!
I think I found it.
The story of Milton Hershey is certainly inspiring. He settled in the
Pennsylvania farm country and built a town and formed an industry. Unlike
many of his contemporaries, Hershey actually cared about his people and
went to great lengths to bless them.
As I thought about the 50,000 cows again, Psalm 50 came to mind. I kept
hearing the words, "Every animal in the forest is mine and the cattle on a
thousand hills." God was stating the fact that God is far greater than anyone
or anything else we know.
The good news is that in God we have one who is far greater than "Milton
Hershey." In John 1 it says, "The Word became flesh and dwelt among us."
At Christmas we celebrate the fact that God came to live among us. In John 3
we read about the depth of his love and care.
Joseph Scriven captured this in his classic hymn, "What a Friend We Have in
Jesus." In the second verse he writes, "Can we find a friend so faithful, Who
will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness. Take it to the Lord
It has been said that chocolate can cure ten prominent ailments. I believe it.
I also know that God can do so much more. He can bring healing to your
brokenness and forgiveness to burdened heart. So if you have been carry a
heavy load, I encourage you to "take it to the Lord in prayer..."
God bless! See you in church.
