Are You Ready for the Call?
                                                                                            January 27, 2016

Dear Friends,

I was half way to Westerly when my phone rang.  "Can we show the house today
at 4:15 p.m.?  The listing agreement we have with the realtor says that they will give
us 24 hours notice but that has rarely stopped us from agreeing to a showing on
short notice.

We've been trying to sell our house, off and on, for the last two and a half years.
The market in our area is not good.  Most homes have lost close to $100,000 of
their value. We've done everything we could to try to facilitate a sale.  It just hasn't
happened yet.

I turned the car around and headed home.  The most challenging aspect of having
your house on the market is knowing that you could get a call like this at any
moment.  It sounds silly but it means some extra diligence in keeping everything
ready to show.

Lori and I both work full time jobs.  With our hectic, fast paced lifestyles, it
means that some nights there is little left in the tank when we get home.
Sometimes the basics get pushed into the next day.  It is easy to get lazy and
think the call won't come today.

As I picked up the last of the dog toys I thought about how often Jesus called
us to be ready.  He spoke about the end coming like a thief in the night.  He told
them to be diligent and to be prepared because no one was going to know when it
would come.

He warned them that things could change in the twinkling of an eye.  In other
words, make each day count.  Live as if it was the last day.  Don't put things off.
I think that's good advice.  When you do things deliberately with an eye to the
future, it makes the present come alive.

It forces you to focus on the important things.  That's why Jesus urged his followers
to "store up treasurers in heaven."  In other words, do things that matter.  Do things
that have eternal significance.  You never know when Jesus will be back.  We need to
be ready to greet him.

I know our house will sell in God's time.  Until then we get to enjoy the benefits
of living in a model home.  When the call comes and someone wants to buy it, we
will be ready.

God bless. See you in church.
