Are You In God's Hall of Fame? July 30, 2014
On Monday I visited the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the morning and the Rock &
Roll Hall of Fame in the afternoon. As I wandered the halls I started thinking
about what a great honor it is to be listed among the inductees. Only the cream of
the crop make it here.
So it was pretty funny when, after I posted a photo on Facebook of my daughter,
Rebecca, and I standing outside the Football Hall of Fame, someone remarked,
"Cal Lord finally made it to the Hall of Fame!"
As I walked through exhibits that day featuring the likes of Vince Lombardi, Jerry
Rice, and Jim Brown in Canton and, Elvis, Madonna and Michael Jackson in
Cleveland, I chuckled to myself and thought, "Cal Lord will never be in anybody's
real Hall of Fame."
Whether it was Les Paul and his guitars or Lawrence Taylor and his defensive
play, these superstars made their mark on history. Each of the athletes or artists
in their respective Halls were said to have been game changers.
The closest most of us will ever get to this kind of enshrinement will be to walk
through Johnny Cash's touring bus (like we did!!!) or touch the autographs of artist
like Jimi Hendrix and Mama Cass.
They just don't have categories for normal people like us. You don't earn a
"Souper Bowl" ring for helping out at the homeless shelter or soup kitchen or set
a record for the most yardage for participating in benefit walk-a-thons.
The truth is that God calls us to be the best that we can be. He invites us to use
our gifts to reach out and make a difference in the people he sends our way. So
forget making the World's Hall of Fame and simply do something with your life
that is heroic in God's eyes!
That is where the lasting glory lies.
God bless! See you in church. Cal
