Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is a Baptist Church?
A: A Baptist Church is made up of Christians who hold to a certain set of Christian principals that other Christians may or may not uphold in totality. Below you can read some the most deeply held truths of Baptist Christian believers;
Biblical authority for all faith & practice – The Bible is the source of authority Autonomy of the local church – Each church is free to discern their own mission through prayer
Priesthood of every believer – We are all ministers, able to serve God Two ordinances of the church: Baptism by immersion & The Lord’s Supper Individual soul liberty – God can speak directly to us. We need no mediator but Christ Salvation through faith alone – It is faith in Christ ,not works, that saves us The separation of church & state – The two should operate independently.
Q: Do you have to be a member to attend services?
A: No. All are welcome. There is no registration or sign up needed to attend. Just show up and you will be welcomed. Worship is each week at 10:30 a.m. We also have Christian education classes for all ages, from nursery school through adult every Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m.
Q: Do you have more than one worship service?
A: Presently we have one service every Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. We also have a mid-week evening service for those who have to work on Sundays. It is held on Wednesday nights at 6:30 p.m. Right now this is all we have but some day we may look at and earlier service on Sunday morning or a Saturday night alternative.
Q: Are children welcomed in the worship service?
A: Yes, children are always welcome. We even make a special time for them called the Children’s Moment in the service. The pastor invites them to come forward so he can share a simple message with them about the love of God.
We also offer nursery care, from just before our worship service begins until after it ends, for parents who would prefer to leave their babies and toddlers in a clean, safe environment while they enjoy the worship service. Keep them with you or use the nursery, it is your choice. We love seeing the children.
The older elementary school children are invited to Children’s Church after the Children’s Moment for a time of fun and learning. They can go along or stay with you.
There are children’s Bibles and coloring books in the front hall for those parents who are planning to keep their children with them through part or all of the service.
Q: Is there a cost to attending church?
A: The only cost is that you might like it and be compelled to come again and again. 🙂 We don’t charge for any of our services at church. We do take a free will offering in the midst of our worship time. No one is compelled to give. This is an opportunity for members and guests to share in the ministry of the church by offering God one’s talents and financial gifts. Each year members of the church are asked to estimate how much they might give to support the church so that realistic goals can be set and planning can be done. These pledges are made in good faith and are not binding.
Q: Can I attend the church even if I don’t live in Westerly?
A: Those who currently attend our church come from as far away as Sterling, CT. We have many people who travel as far as an half hour to get here. Most people live within 15 to 20 minutes.
